He was a proud husband and father who leaves behind his loving wife Athena, his children Ashleigh, Matthew (Rachel) and Joanna. He also leaves behind his parents Charles and Margaret Getty, his siblings Janet (Rick), Patricia, Stephen (Diana), his nieces and nephews Jenny, Meghann, Jason, Shaun and their families as well as a large extended family that he spoke of often.
His early career included being a Police Officer with Canadian Pacific Railway Police as well as Delta Municipal Police. In September 1988 he joined Transport Canada where he spent almost 30 years in various roles supporting the Transportation Security program. One of the highlights of his career was becoming a Certified Aviation Security Auditor with the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) and working in the Philippines, Switzerland and the United States.
His love of sport was fostered by his father at a very young age and stayed with him throughout his life. Some of the most memorable moments of his childhood involved sporting events. Although he was often ridiculed, he continued to support the Detroit Lions football team and had done so since he was 7 years old. He even made it to Detroit for a Thanksgiving Day game a few years ago, where he sat in the stands long after the game was over not wanting the experience to end.
John was a loving man whose humour could always be counted on to bring levity to family gatherings and the workplace. He will be truly missed.
