85. He was born on November 27, 1931 in Cheltenham, England. He
obtained his PhD. from the University of Liverpool (Physical Chemistry),
followed by 3 years post-doctoral research at Berkeley, CA. He taught at
Imperial College London for 6 years before accepting a post in 1966 at the
then new Simon Fraser University, where he remained until his retirement.
He was the co-founder of the SFU Retirees Association and of the B.C. Wine
Appreciation Society. John is survived by his longtime partner, Marilyn
Cheveldayoff. He is also survived by his 5 children, Karin Anne (Rob
Manering), Alison Michelle (Greg Slobodin), Matthew John (Danielle
Dutch), Simeon Nicholas (Amanda Torres) and Iain Bruce (Josie Gilson) and
by his 5 grandchildren, Max, Kai, Kyla Slobodin, Kian Slobodin, and Aaron
Slobodin. John loved his family, great friends, great food and a great Scotch.
