Joyce Beatrice Campkin

With sorrow we announce the passing of Joyce Beatrice Campkin on August 3, 2021. She was born in Winnipeg MB on December 3, 1924, the older of two daughters of Hugh and Doris (née Ditchburn) Campkin. Joyce was baptized into the Christian faith at St. John’s Anglican Church in Indian Head SK, where she also attended school and learned life-lessons during the Great Depression.

In 1939 the family began a westward trek that eventually led to Burnaby. Joyce enrolled in Burnaby North High School, joined Girl Guides, and found friendship and nurture at St. Nicholas Anglican Church.

Soon after her high school graduation she enrolled in the School of Nursing at Vancouver General Hospital. The program was demanding, and residential life was carefully structured and disciplined. Joyce persisted. In October of 1947, she was awarded her Certificate of Registration. This marked the beginning of a life-long career, enhanced later by additional training at McGill University in Montreal and the UBC School of Nursing. Over the course of more than 40 years, Joyce ministered to patients on various wards, assisted surgeons in the operating room, and taught students the discipline and the craft of nursing. She loved her work, demonstrating benevolent concern for her patients and colleagues alike.

In the 1950s, a friendship had led to membership in Augustana Lutheran church. She devoted herself to service in the congregation’s programs of ministry and its governance. Many worshippers were graced by her warm smile and friendly welcome.

Joyce also became a devotee of choral music and became an audience-regular of both the Vancouver Chamber Choir and Chor Leoni Men’s Choir.

Although afflicted by arthritis and asthma in her later years, Joyce resolved to remain in her apartment for as long as she could — a goal that was enabled by devoted friends. It was only in the last few weeks of her life that hospitalization became necessary. Joyce was predeceased by her parents, her sister Barb, and her nephew Robbin. She is survived by her niece, Leona, and many loving friends.

The Memorial Service for Joyce Beatrice Campkin will be held on October 2nd at 2:00 PM at Spirit of Life Lutheran Church, 375 W. 10th Ave, Vancouver (face-masks and adherence to additional health-safety protocols are required).
