Margaret Markarian was born in Amman, Jordan on May 8th, 1962. She grew up in the Middle East amongst her family and immigrated to Canada in 1982. Margaret was the first of her family to make this journey; eventually sponsoring all her siblings and mother to come join her across the globe.
It was in North Vancouver where she settled and gave birth to her daughter, Carolyn, in 1984. Margaret’s mother, Anahid, passed on her skillset with fabrics and the needle to her, creating an amazing seamstress within the BC film industry. It was Margaret’s solid talent that would allow her to raise her daughter as a single parent and work with many famous celebrities on television and in the movies. She would go on to make a name for herself within the costume designer community, bringing new opportunities and valued friendships with her peers.
Outside of Margaret’s professional life, she was a humble and private person who cared about her family before anything else. She enjoyed cooking traditional Armenian dishes for her friends and relatives. She fell in love with Maui. Margaret also was a fan of Jane Austin’s literature, collecting many of her most prominent volumes. It was within Austin’s works where Margaret had a dream of visiting the vast gardens in greater England, described in her books. And lastly, her most precious treasure in her life was Margaret’s dog, Lily. A beautiful companion that Margaret would bring with her everywhere in life. Lily was a very important figure in Margaret’s world, they were the best of friends.
Margaret was a gentle, endearing person who would put everyone first before herself. She would work day and night to ensure her daughter, Carolyn, would have everything she needed or wanted in life. Margaret loved her mother and siblings and would speak to them everyday on the phone and visit them whenever possible. She was an optimist and saw the lighter side of people she’d meet and would never feel any ill will towards anyone. She is and will always be remembered as a kind soul whose generosity knows no bounds.
Margaret is survived by her daughter, Carolyn Agazarian, brothers Norig (Jack) Markarian, Harout (Artine) Markarian, Joseph (Joe) Markarian, sisters Marina Lessoway, Elizabeth (Lena) Marshalian, and sister in laws Hiam Markarian, Razan Markarian and Eva Markarian.
