November 30th 1924 – August 1st, 2017
Irene was born in Quathiaski Cove, Quadra Island, BC. She is predeceased by her husband Bill, and her brother Albert. She is survived by her son, Bruce and his wife, Valerie, as well as her favorite ‘other son’, Chung Chow, and many nieces and nephews.
Irene was born and raised on Quadra Island, off the BC coast. When she was old enough, she moved to Victoria where she attended clerical college. It was a career choice that served her well.
She loved to travel, crossing Canada via Greyhound bus as a young woman, working in Montreal for a time, and then returning to the west coast (also via Greyhound) through the United States.
She was an avid sports fan, following baseball whether it was the Vancouver Canadians at Nat Bailey Stadium, the Toronto Blue Jays, or the Seattle Mariners. She was also a huge BC Lions fan.
She spent many years working at Placer Development but gave it up to raise a family. As a housewife, she volunteered at many youth events from baseball for kids, Scouts, and Beavers. After her own family was grown, she continued to volunteer, and went back to work.
She loved to travel (mostly road trips) when she had a family, and continued to do so after she retired. She always enjoyed bus trips, but train travel was her favorite. She enjoyed spending Christmas at Harrison Hot Springs, the music of the Jones Boys, and dinner at The Copper Room.
She enjoyed gardening and painting, and her sparkly blue eyes and ready smile made many friends and acquaintances even through a casual meeting.
Thank You to her care team at Arbutus Care Centre, especially Reena, whom she just loved. A special thank you to her doctor, Dr. Merrick Tosefsky, and his assistant Vickie who went above and beyond to see to her comfort and needs even prior to her final move.
No memorial or funeral service will be held, by her request. If you wish, a donation in memory of Irene Hawick can be made to Vancouver Children’s Hospital.
