My Great Aunt Mary was not someone I spent a lot of time with.... she lived in BC and I lived in the prairies. But throughout my life, I have known her as someone with extraordinary kindness and wisdom.  

My mother Patricia Kuzak, who died two years ago, spent as much time with her Aunt Mary as she could. She loved her dearly....

I recently visited Aunt Mary when I was spending a few months in Vancouver.  She only had a few weeks to live, but she greeted me with such warmth and love.... she asked about all the family by name, and she shared some stories of the time she spent with my mother, Pat. I was struck by how clear- headed she was, but more than that, by the love that poured out of her... 

She told me that love was the only thing that mattered in this life. And that it can be shown in the small gestures of taking someone’s hand, looking them in the eye, and asking “how are you?”  

I will always remember that message. Thank you Mary. You made the world a better place with your love.
