I first met Merl in around 1980 working with him clearing out a collapsed adit up the Ashlu River.  Here I was a strapping young 20 year old and I was amazed that this "old" guy was matching me shovel for shovel...one tough old bird.  I worked a few more times with Merl in the Iskut River area and the Yukon but was always amazed at his stamina and work ethic.   Merl could be cantankerous but he had a heart of gold, had a passion for prospecting and loved working in remote areas.

Merl, I hope you have your shovel, a few sticks of powder, some blasting caps  and your rock hammer with you. Rest in Peace.
