I met Mike during one my best childhood experiences. The soccer exchange where our team went north to play and spend a weekend with our neighbors across the border and then the next weekend Mike's team came to the state's to play on our turf. Or cintrex at that time.  I remember Mike as a friend, athletic and well liked by everyone. Truly sorry to hear of his passing.  He was a great person. 

To Mike's family: I met Mike around 1984, in typical fashion, on the slopes of Hollyburn ski hill.  He, myself and my wife Sue Akenhead became fast friends.  He introduced us to Benno's ski Group, where he taught cross-country skiing and skied with them on their trips to Manning, Whistler and 100 Mile House.  Thus began a warm and wonderful friendship that lasted until around 1995, when he 'settled down' with Ingrid and family.
    Sue and I were always trying to get Mike to join us in a triathlon and he ws always trying to get us to come on long bike rides!  We shared many jokes, playful fun and some wise worldly wisdom on life that only Mike could deliver!  My only regret is that the distance from Maple Ridge to North Vancouver and our growing families demanded we spend little time together after 1995. Mike was one of a kind, warm, generous, honest and endearing; we shall miss him forever.  We are honoured to have called him a friend.  Keith and Sue Akenhead.

It was so nice to attend Mike's Celebration of Life on Thurs. and hear that the young man we knew in the 80's, never lost his fantastic personality. We met him through Benno's Cross Country Ski Adventures. We skied,  cycled, played soccer and partied with him. He taught lessons with my husband. When we had our first baby, he came to visit. When Alex was born, he brought her over and was so proud of her. When we moved to Surrey, he came out to give advice on some renos. When our girls were too big for the bike trailer, he was happy to use it with his youngsters.  We will remember him fondly, especially when watching the Tour de France. 


I grew up with Mike through elementary and high school and played a lot of sports together (he was always good at whatever he did, I was just relatively tall).  In 1983 we rode our bikes from Vancouver to San Francisco, although we didn’t actually ride together much.  Every morning we would leave and in about 2 minutes he would be out of my sight.  My only hope of seeing him for the rest of the day was to catch up with him as he was fixing a flat tire.  After about 14 flat tires in the first 4 days he figured out what the cause was and, after that, I would only see him at the end of the day where he would have been enjoying a beverage with my dad while they waited about 4 hours for me.
In 1984 he was the “best man” at my wedding.  We kept in touch over the years sharing family stories and he was clearly proud and happy of his family life over the years.  And I was able to see a couple of his amazing work projects in progress - quite a career!
I regret not getting him to share his musical talent with me, 
Sad that he is gone, but I’ll always think of him as a Best Man.

I knew Mike from high school, back in the 1970s when we were both student athletes. We spent a lot of time together in the last years of high school, finding common interests in quiet pleasures like biking, hiking, camping, swimming, listening to music, and drinking wine. We had some great times, including an epic hike of the West Coast Trail. I left the city shortly after graduation but we would hang out when I was back in town. On one visit he took me out to look at a project he had just finished, a commercial building in Port Moody, the first one where he had taken a lead role. I was impressed. Mike, ever humble, pointed out all of the little mistakes he had made, all of which were invisible to me. We lost touch with each other for the better part of three decades until I returned to Vancouver in 2010 and looked him up. It was great to reconnect and talk about the ‘good old days’. I could see that he had done well for himself and was proud of his work. He seemed a bit surprised that all of these prominent people would hire him to build their dream homes. It made perfect sense to me; he was straightforward, honest, and dependable. And he was a brilliant friend; warm, big-hearted, quick to smile and laugh, and always up for an adventure. So sad that he is gone. My deepest sympathy to his family and to all of those who knew and loved him. 

I first met Mike playing soccer on the same Mt Seymour team (about age 11) - I can't remember the team name.  We then played basketball at Windsor grade 8 to 12.  In comparison to most of our team mates, we were both vertically challenged.  Mike was fast and a play maker - he was great athlete!  The sports teams we both played for were also our social network - getting together on weekends and attending parties.  Recently (after more than 40 years) our basketball team met and Mike and I spoke for a little while - I wish that we spoken more.  Like Mike, I also enjoy cycling - I would have enjoyed sharing our cycling stories.  I'll always remember his smile which reflects his passion and joy for life.  

I will always remember the cycling trip that Mike and Jim Langman did down to California.  I think Mr. Langman went with them.  The stories they told when they got back were amazing and I can’t imagine the world without this man’s amazing smile that was always present.  Thinking about you guys at this difficult time ❤️

I am so sorry to hear about Mikes passing. My condolences to the family. I will always cherish the great memories we had . He was a great man  who had a huge heart . Will miss you big guy but never forget you, Rest In Peace pal !! Your friend always Danny luongo
