I'm deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Mike.  
Please accept my heartfelt condolences.
 I'm sincerely sorry for your loss.
 When you toss a stone into the water, long after it has sunk to the bottom, the ripples it made spread out along the surface of the water. Mike had this kind of impact during his life.

﻿My name is Doreen Langmead and it was your brother who was the prosecutor when my son was murdered.    Shelene Rail was his Junior and it was she who gave me your address.

There were two men involved in our case and both Mr. Petrie and Miss Rail did a resoundingly fantastic job.    

His good humour never left him as he cheerfully and adroitly backed them into a corner leaving them no wiggle room whatsoever.    They were guilty and stood no chance.

I was very sorry indeed to read of his passing, Dear Lori.    He was a first-rate lawyer -   a good guy we all liked very much.    Please accept my sincere condolences.

I knew Mike through work. I'm a retired RCMP member who worked with Mike on some homicide and sexual assault investigations/prosecutions during our Abbotsford days. In the years after that I'd talk to Mike around various courthouses and Crown Counsel offices and continue to get his sage advice on various legal and investigative issues. 

I was a young police officer just breaking into major investigations and met Mike at just the right time. He was the first and rare person who took an interest in the development of individual investigators through promoting legal research and sharing his knowledge. He involved me in the prosecution side of things more so than most and it opened my eyes to prosecutorial challenges that only enhanced my abilities as an investigator for years to come. 

We were work friends who respected each other. Since Mike's passing I've talked to many other retired investigators and have confirmed that Mike had a similar impact on them as well. We of course passed that knowledge and work ethic onto younger investigators so in that way Mike's legacy continues. Mike's passion for the law and his approach to his job by always trying to do the right thing made a big impact on me many years ago and I just wanted to share that with his family at this sad time. 

In the RCMP our motto is 'Maintiens Le Droit'. Maintaining the right was what Mike tried to do every day at work and I want you and your family to know how much I and others appreciated that. 

Mike had a good heart and that was obvious to so many people. The relationship between cops and lawyers can be tense at times. It's the nature of the beast and Mike had a natural way of bridging relationships. 

I saw him dealing with victims and victims families in a way that I know they appreciated. He made everybody feel a wee bit special and that is a rare gift. I am honoured to have known him and consider him a friend.

I wish to express my sincere condolences to the loved ones, family, friends and colleagues  of Mike Petrie, all of us left to miss and reminisce him today.  I have spent more time with Mike than any other lawyer in my career with the RCMP; at times daily during one of the most exhausting trials our country has seen.   Mike had an uncanny ability to put people at ease, get answers to questions most would avoid asking, and be able to conduct an artful cross examination without a list or a note in front of him.  Even with the impact that the case had on him, I know Mike would choose to do it again, stepping up to the importance of bringing closure to so many families of the missing.  Perhaps Mike’s musical ear gave him the added advantage of reading people so well, disarming them with his squinted chuckle and smile.  Although I may not have always agreed with him (such is the nature of leaderships), I hold Mike with great respect and appreciated him as both prosecutor and colleague.  Well done,  Mike.
