It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Neil Frederick Hummel on August 9, 2024 at the age of 78 years old. Beloved husband, father, and friend, Neil left a lasting impact on everyone who knew him.
Neil was born on April 2, 1946, to Frederick and Ruth Hummel in Toronto, Ontario. After graduating from Etobicoke High School (and spending a memorable summer working on a garbage truck), he enrolled at Queen’s University and earned his Bachelor of Commerce degree in 1969.
While at university, he met Patricia Hummel, who would later become his loving wife on August 17, 1973. Shortly after starting a family, they embarked on a new adventure to Vancouver. While it was meant as a short-term move, they never left, growing attached to the North Shore and the lifelong friends they met there.
In Vancouver, Neil continued a successful career as a Chartered Accountant, lending his talents to Arthur Andersen and First City Trust and serving as Chief Financial Officer for Vancouver based companies, including LMI Technologies. His keen mind and attention to detail earned him respect and admiration in his professional field, but it was his ability to connect with people that truly set him apart.
Beyond his career, he was an avid athlete, particularly passionate about pickleball, squash, and golf. Other passions included traveling the world, most recently to Ireland, spending time at Yellow Point Lodge, and enjoying time with his family. He was an active member of a variety of clubs including FEI Canada, Probus, and the Hollyburn Country Club.
Neil was someone who came alive around people and up until his final days was enjoying good wine, good music and good conversation with the people he loved. Above all, he was a devoted father and husband, whose love, guidance, and support will be sorely missed.
Neil will be lovingly remembered by Patricia Hummel, his wife of 51 years and the love of his life, and their two children, Stephanie Hummel (spouse, Remy Scalza) and Bradley Hummel (spouse, Alison Hummel). He is also survived by his cherished grandchildren, Wesley and Nicholas Hummel, his sister, Alison Wilcox, his sister-in-law, Marnie Slatcher, and his brother-in-law, Bill Slatcher. Neil will be profoundly missed by his family, friends, and all who were fortunate enough to have known him.
Among Neil’s final wishes was a party with friends and family. In that spirit, a Celebration of Life will be held on Sunday, November 17 from 2-5pm at the Seymour Golf & Country Club in North Vancouver. To RSVP, please send an email to [email protected] by November 2. We hope you can join us to share stories and memories.
In lieu of flowers, a donation to the ALS Society of Canada in his memory would be appreciated.
