It is with heavy hearts that we share the passing of Raymond Douglas Smart. He passed away peacefully at the Cottage Hospice in Vancouver with his loving wife of 43 years by his side. Ray was born in North Vancouver, and he was a man of many talents and skills - he especially loved gardening.
Ray was a steadfast and hard worker. He was employed for 24 years with L & K Lumber in North Vancouver until the company folded in the summer of 1985. Afterwards, he was fortunate enough to obtain employment with North Arm Transportation in Vancouver, wherein he was employed for the next 24 years, until he retired in 2009. On January 4, 1974, Ray, along with four other co-workers, was presented with the “Star of Courage” medal by the Attorney-General, Alex Macdonald. They were honoured for their brave and swift actions when they towed a blazing and potentially explosive barge out of Coal Harbour.
Ray is survived by his wife, Solange; two children Jamey (Shannon), and Kim (Sherwin); and two grandchildren Jonah and Eden, and his brother William. Ray was predeceased by his father, Roy Smart and his mother Margaret Dixon. The Smart family would like to express their deepest gratitude to the home care nursing staff at Vancouver Coastal Health (VCH), as well as the Cottage Hospice staff, for their compassion and professionalism.
Donations to commemorate Ray Douglas Smart can be made to the Canadian Liver Foundation (CLF).
Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared at www.MeM.com for the Smart family.
