known by his family as Alan and by his friends as Al or Woodsy
Alan had a presence: big, strong and handsome as well as kind, friendly, smart and compassionate. He will be deeply missed by all those whose lives were brightened by his spirit.
In later years, health challenges slowed the once effortlessly fit and powerful body, but his loyalty and protectiveness never faded. A bit of a temper at times, he was always the one you wanted on your side. He was there in a heartbeat.
Most content in solitude, Alan devoured books and dreamed of a log cabin in the countryside far away from it all (ideally in Scotland). Out in the world though, joy and humor took over, with stories of youthful shenanigans (of which there were many) told through laughter and a smirk, drawing family and old and new friends close.
Childhood was spent in Richmond and later he moved to Kerrisdale (attended Magee Secondary School), North Vancouver, Nelson and Ladner. Athletic and tough, Alan threw himself into many sports, especially rugby with the Kats Rugby Club including memorable tours to Ireland in 1973 and the Far East in 1976.
Work life ranged widely, with special fondness for the years at the Fraser Arms Hotel as well as in the film industry as a production and cast driver. Whether dealing with “stars” or crew, everyone received the same respect, building an impressive reputation as someone people genuinely liked and trusted.
For many years, Alan helped care for his mother, Marilyn, who died in 2021, helping to make it possible for her to stay in her home for as long as she could. They were very close. A close bond also existed with his grandmother who died in 1998. Loved ones now grieving include his Uncle Ernie and Auntie Ann, both of whom he admired and adored. Also, his sisters, Elizabeth, Mairi (Patrick) and Barbara (Shan), his nephews, Matthew, Spencer and James, his Aunt Elsie and his cousins Erin (Kellen) and Elena (Tyler). Family meant everything and each one was held dear to him.
We love you Alan! In our hearts you are at peace, free of pain, finally driving that long-dreamed-of Cobra in a better place - your big heart and gentle soul at rest.
