Born in Steveson, BC, to Fusae and Takesaburo Hamaguchi, Roy’s family was interned to Minto Mine in 1942. The family later moved to Greenwood to be with their grandparents. Roy graduated from high school in Grand Forks and later attended UBC where he achieved his degree in Engineering Physics in 1958.
Roy lived and worked in Seattle, Montreal, Rochester, Peterborough, Toronto, Ottawa, and Vancouver, where he retired. It was in Toronto where Roy married Audrey and the two began their family.
Some of the companies that he worked for: Avro, Sperry, Boeing, National Research Council of Canada, MacDonald Dettwiler, and Intertech. A determined and quiet man, Roy enjoyed hiking, fishing, bowling, volunteering, sudoku, and, of course, photography. An avid photographer, his photos appeared in renowned photo magazines, books, Reifel Marshnotes, calendars, cards, and at numerous exhibits and presentations. His travels included the Arctic (x3), Antarctica, China, Japan, Europe, Africa, and SE Asia.
He was a member of the Ottawa Japanese Canadian Association, and the Tetra Society of BC in which Roy was very passionate about. In his time with Tetra he helped design and fabricate tools and apparatuses that helped those who needed them.
He will be dearly missed by his children, Deidre and Todd, his siblings Marion (Ron), Ted, Ed (Anne), Robert, Miki, and Setsuko (James), and his many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his loving wife Audrey, and brothers Takeshi and Jiro.
