I'm so sorry to hear about Roy's passing.   As a recent graduate and younger employee I remember his positive attitude and willingness to share his knowledge with others.    He will be greatly missed!

Dear Roy's Family,
please accept my heartfelt condolences in Roy's passing. Roy was a fun, knowledgeable, kind and all-round wonderful man. It was a privilege to have had the opportunity to work with him at BC Hydro.

One of my first work experiences with Roy was doing an audit on a 23,000 ft^2 home. Yes that number is correct! This was the number one residential customer in BC. Despite the fact that the 'home' had a 600 amp service, lighting controls to each room terminating in 14 electrical panels and such things as eaves trough ice melt (in Vancouver) none of that fazed Roy. In his casual easy going manner we got us through the massive home and Roy pointed out some considerable energy saving opportunities. Steady, methodical and always personable! I too will miss Roy and his ability to remind me what is important in life.

Roy and I met many years ago putting together Lights of Hope at St.Paul's hospital.  He was a founder and driving force behind getting that project started and remained one of those at the heart of it for almost 2 decades.  

I am personally grateful to have known him and benefitted from the energy he put into this great community project.

I will miss him personally, and We will miss him from our team.  He has made our city a better place.

Roy's infectious sense of humour, joy for life and positive perspective will be greatly missed by all.  Though I only knew him through the IES, Roy was a role model and a person I looked forward to talking to at events.
My thoughts are with his family.

I will remember Roy for his enthusiasm for good lighting that saves energy (in that order), and for spreading the news with demonstrations. On one visit to BC Hydro for a field study in the mid-2000s, I recall his excitement at showing me the latest in LED office lighting, which they were testing for the first time. His glee at the potential was infectious; but he also saw where progress on quality was still to be made. 

We'll keep working on that Roy, but we will miss you being part of it.

I was very sad to hear this news, a great personality gone too soon.  I first met Roy (and Cristian) at the IESNA meeting in New Orleans in 1999 where he suggested that BC Hydro and NRC collaborate on evaluating energy savings and other benefits associated with advanced lighting control systems.  That led to award-winning projects that made a real difference to the industry, I think.  I remember a great day driving through the Arizona desert before another IESNA meeting, seeing some great sites and listening to Roy's eclectic music collection.  And when my wife and I attended the Vancouver Olympics, we were staying with her aunt in Richmond.  We took the SkyTrain downtown and as we emerged from underground onto the street who was the very first person we saw walking towards us?  It was Roy, what a pleasant coincidence (and he seemed to have tickets to every event!).
So long Roy, we'll miss you.

Pris and kids - we are so sorry to here of Roy's passing and sorry we were not there at this time.  We've been away for the last week and are returning home tomorrow.  Roy was such a great person and great neighbour.  I always enjoyed chatting with him when coming or gong.  We are all going to miss him.

I came to know Roy when I joined Power Smart in 1991 and I remember him as one of those mainstays that were simply always there even after retirement. A pleasant smile and wise words with a sage, knowing sense of what was right. My condolences to Roy's family and friends. He will be missed.

We are very sorry to hear of Roy's passing. Both my Dad and I worked with Roy at BC Hydro. When my Dad had life threatening health issues a few years back, Roy was very supportive during our famiy's crisis. I am very sorry to hear of Roy's passing. I have known and admired Roy for over 20 years as a friend and colleague at Power Smart. He was one of the most caring, gentle and intelligent people that I have met. I will miss him very much.

We want to send our condolences to the Hughes family and wish them the strength that they need to get through these very hard times.
Roy brought people together and for that unique feature he will be remembered by us. Even though we are far away in Europe now, we will keep the many fond memories of our friend Roy.

My heart felt condolences to the Hughes Family. I have known Roy for over 30 years. First in the BC Hydro Ski Club and helping build the new lodge. In 1991 He hired me back in BC Hydro Power Smart for which I will forever greatful. Roy was my inspiration and mentor to get involved in lighting design. His dedication to the to the energy savings possible through lighting changes made BC Hydro's Power Smart Programs such a success and saved BC Hydro customers millions of dollars. He will be greatly missed!

I am so sorry and sad to learn that Roy has passed away. We worked together at Power Smart for a few years.  I will always remember his warm & kind heart and his bright smile and his passion for his work. My deepest condolences to you all.

What an amazing man.  He will be missed.  Having known Roy for the past 12 to 15 years through his work at CSA on lighting standards - think I got to know him pretty well.  A gentleman, a diplomat and at times the arbitrator ... he had a gentle soft spoken way about him ... and over dinner ... or fishing for salmon off of Vancouver Island (he never did land the one he managed to hook - but we all agree it was likely too big to get in the boat  ;-) there was always a smile and a friendly laugh.  He was someone I respected very much ... he will be missed.

This is very sad news. I've worked at BC Hydro for 20 years and known Roy throughout that time, and that was only about half the time that he worked here! Great guy, very sad for the loss but glad I got to know him.

Roy was a great mentor to me at BC Hydro and I am greatly saddened to hear of his passing. I will always remember his enthusiasm for lighting efficiency and design. My condolences to his family and all who knew him.

I am so sorry to hear of Roy's passing. I worked with Roy for many years through our interactions with the IES and through the various lighting companies that I work with.

Roy was a very important part of my life, both at B.C. Hydro, and privately, I taught Roy and his Son how to Scuba Dive way back when, He was responsible for my Winning the I.E.S. Residential Lighting Award, and my entry being shown by B.C. Hydro on their Lighting Ideas Brochures. He was a great listener, had a great sense of Humor, and we will all miss him very much.  My respect and condolences go out to his wife and children.

My first meetimg with Roy was as my IES teacher, early in my lighting career and he has remained a part of my life as a friend and colleague over the years. We valued his partcipation on the board at the IES and appreciated his support in so many ways.
