She is also survived by cousins Fern Bamford of Manitou, MB, Russell Finnen of Killarney, MB, and her new found distant relatives in Lethbridge, AB.
She is predeceased by her parents Norman & Nora (Mitchell) Finnen, Grandparents Jack & Mary (Rankin) Mitchell, Alexander and Annie (Fowler) Finnen. Her good friends Janet and Nadine and other friends she made over the years.
Shirley was born on March 16, 1934 in Killarney Manitoba in the family home on Clark. Her father Norman managed the Crescent Creamery there for several years until he was transferred to Swan River. In 1943 the family moved to Vancouver, BC where they were to remain. They enjoyed several summer trips back to Killarney over the years. In 2010 Shirley was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease but like everything else took it in stride and would not let it slow her down. In 2013 she fell and broke her hip and spent 3 months in hospital and was told upon release she would never walk again. She proved them wrong when her son Mike enrolled her in a special Pilates for Parkinson’s and after just two one hour sessions was up and about on her walker. She attended for a year and her mobility improved vastly. She was able to walk albeit with a walker right up to the end. In 2015 she was diagnosed with Lewy Body Dementia related to her Parkinson’s. Her son Mike retired in 2015. They sold their big house and moved into a smaller home in North Vancouver where he became her full time care giver along with the assistance of Community Nurses until April 2018. She was admitted to the hospice on May 8th and after being there for two weeks the following 5 weeks rallied almost back to her old self however it was short lived and she slipped into a coma and passed away after 8 days. She will be missed especially by her son Mike who stood by her, cared and advocated for her right up to the end.
The family would like to thank the Nurses & Doctors of the Hospice for the excellent care mom received while there. Also special thanks to her Case Manager Susan Vizbisky at Vancouver Coastal Health and all the nursing staff that helped with the in home care.
Shirley is being interred at Boal First Memorial in a niche in the Heather Gardens.
Until we meet again Mom!
