Stella passed away peacefully at home with her daughter by her side. She was a loving mother and grandmother, and an independent spirit until the end. She was born in Westlock, Alberta and raised on a farm. She was proud of her Ukrainian heritage. The youngest of five children, Stella had a twin brother Stanley and was eager to read books as soon as she learned English at school. She was curious about life and took every English course she could at UBC in the early 1950s. She liked to learn new languages and she studied French, German, Spanish and took Ukrainian in her later years. She met her first husband Ed Lodzins at McGill. They moved to Edmonton, and she started her career as a school teacher. Her marriage didn't last and she moved to Sudbury, Ontario with her three children and married Donald Scott, but that was a short-lived union and she gave birth to another son. She started a new chapter of her life in Vancouver in 1971, as a brave and persistent single mother of four children. She took her first teaching position in a high school in Port Hardy for a year and worked in several metro Vancouver elementary schools teaching ESL until her retirement in 1995. Stella was a voracious reader, passionate gardener and keen bird watcher. She loved the opera and classical music. She raised her lively family in Deep Cove, North Vancouver in a house with dogs, cats, birds and fish. She was firm and tender and modeled kindness and generosity to others. After retiring, she lived for twenty years on a houseboat on the Fraser river near Fort Langley and she had the best floating garden in the marina. She lived an active life and liked to swim, go on walks with her dog and ride her bicycle. Her final years were spent in North Vancouver. Predeceased by parents Kalina and Wasyl Sawchuk and brothers Stanley Sawchuk (Faye), Mike Sawchuk, and sisters Ann Sawchuck, Mary Semeniuk (Bill). She is survived by her daughter Andrea Scott, sons Eric Lodgins (Kerry), David Lodzins (Mary), Bruce Scott and grandchildren Dalton, Donovan, Edward, Chris, Liam and Clare and nephews. Stella our 'star' will live on in our memories and we miss her dearly. A celebration of life will be held at a later date. If desired, a donation in support of Ukraine would be appreciated.
