Vancouver, BC - Tom passed away peacefully on June 26, 2025, at the age of 94. A "young feller from Drumheller," Alberta, Tommy was born to Joseph Robert and Minnie Holmes on August 4, 1930, the youngest of seven siblings (Mona, Garth, Walter, Ruth, Allan, Shirley). He moved out west as a teen, heading off work in the camps at Kemano, then later landed at BowMac, working in parts sales, the industry he ultimately continued in. It was at this time that he met the love of his life, Norma, whom he was married to for 67 years until her death in 2022.
Together, they build a life centred around family, community, and church in South Vancouver.
Tom began by coaching and refereeing baseball and football and was one of the founding members and a long-standing president of the Moberly Hall Association. Years later, he was instrumental in its transformation to the Moberly Arts and Cultural Centre. Additionally, he served as President of the Sunset Community Centre, where he was honoured with a Lifetime Membership Award. Later, he served on the Boards of both Killarney and Champlain Community Centres.
Tom and Norma were devoted members of South Hill United Church, which became Oakridge United, enjoying many years of fellowship. Here Tom served on countless committees and was involved in the reimagining of the new church site.
Fiercely committed to social justice, he worked tirelessly for the New Democratic Party of BC, playing a vital role in many campaigns. In recognition of his contributions, he was made an Honorary Life Member.
In recognition for outstanding commitment to his community, Tom was awarded the Queen's Golden Jubilee Medal in 2002.
Tom will be sorely missed by his children, Douglas (Uraporn), Daniel, and Shannon (Agustin); grandchildren, Norman, Félix (Victoria), Raul, Pablo Jesus, Lola Mae, Paloma and Julio; and great-granddaughter, Autumn; as well as his sister Shirley McMillian, his niece/"little-sister" Maureen McLachlan, and a multitude of friends and family members near and far.
A memorial service with a reception to follow will be held at Oakridge United Church, 305 West 41st Ave., Vancouver, on Thursday, July 10, 2025, at 3 PM. In lieu of flowers, donations to First United Community Ministry or a charity of your choice.
