It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Bill Mooney, beloved husband, father and son. Bill will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 35 years, Diane; his daughters, Lauren and Haley; and his mother, Ruth. He was predeceased by his father, Verne, and his sister, Wendy.
Born in Cartwright, Manitoba, Bill always cherished his hometown on the prairies and returned often to visit family and friends. He grew up in Winnipeg, attending Glenlawn Collegiate, where he was a proud member of the 1976–1977 Reach for the Top team that won the national championship.
Bill earned both a Bachelor of Science and Master of Science in Agribusiness from the University of Manitoba in Winnipeg. He began his career in the grain industry shortly after. In 1987, he transferred to Vancouver, where he met -and quickly fell in love with - Diane and the West Coast lifestyle.
Over the decades, Bill built a respected career in the agricultural industry, holding operational, management, and executive roles across companies in Winnipeg, Vancouver, Calgary, and St. Louis. Known for his depth of knowledge, integrity, and willingness to speak his mind, Bill was a trusted mentor, colleague, and friend. Many will remember his eagerness to share ideas and solve problems - often best illustrated on a whiteboard.
Above all, Bill will be remembered for his devotion to family and friends. Despite a busy career, Bill was always there to help Lauren and Haley with homework, cheer at swim meets and softball games, and offer sage advice when the girls had a tough day at work.
Bill had many loves in life including food and wine and those were most enjoyed on vacations with family and friends. In their early parenting years, Bill and Diane would whisk the girls off to a tropical, sunny location to escape the frigid Winnipeg winters. As the years progressed, he and Diane embraced European adventures, visiting more than 20 countries together. Their most recent vacation, this past July, took them through Scandinavia and finally to Estonia, where Bill dipped his feet in the Baltic Sea just a day before returning home to B.C.
Bill always looked for ways to celebrate life and the people in it. Though cancer claimed his life too soon, he spent his final days surrounded by love, welcoming every visit and message with gratitude. We feel profoundly blessed to carry a lifetime of cherished memories with Bill.
“If there is a heaven for me, I’m sure there is a beach attached.”
