One day short of his 81st birthday, Larry lost his eighteen-year battle with cancer in the Sunnybrook palliative care unit the morning of November 18, 2020. He is survived by Audrey (nee Johnston) Long, his loving wife of 58 years and high school sweetheart; his daughters, Stacey Long, her husband Sean Taylor, and Amy Long, her husband TJ Dawe; and his grandsons, Heath and Liam Taylor, all who feel a huge void in their lives and hearts. He will also be sorely missed by his sister Linda Gwin (nee Long), his niece, Megan (nee Gwin) and husband, Richard Dean and boys, Kieran and Shaun; sister-in-law Roberta Wise; niece, Mary Ellen and husband, Gary Jonas, and families; nephew, Robert Wyatt and partner Joanne, and families; and nephew, Daniel Wise and wife, Frances, and family. Larry is predeceased by his loving parents, Ralph and Margaret (nee Purton) Long; his late baby sister, Elizabeth Long; sister and brother-in-law, Mary and Ronald Wyatt and brother-in-law, James Wise. He is also fondly remembered by “The Boys of ‘39” and friends and neighbours on Walker Lake, home of the family cottage.
After meeting Audrey at Earl Haig HS and marrying in 1962, they settled in Willowdale where their families had lived for multiple generations. Larry graduated from the Ontario College of Art in Graphic Design. He started his career at Ideal Printing on Lombard Street in Toronto, moved on to ES&A Robinson (in the Selotape Division) in Leaside, then on to Rothmans, before ending his full and successful career as a well-liked and respected Art Director at Carling O’Keefe. In the early 1990’s, Larry created LL Graphics and quickly adapted to the new way of computerized graphic design. His daughter, Amy, eventually joined him in 2001 and continues the business today. Upon retirement, Larry enjoyed focusing on his family and friends, especially providing care and guidance to his adored grandsons, hardly ever missing out on any of their achievements whether in hockey, baseball, soccer or school.
Given the current pandemic situation, restrictions on attendance and genuine concern for the well being of all, the family will be holding a visitation by invitation only at R.S. Kane Funeral Home at 6150 Yonge Street, North York on Sunday, November 22, 2020. In lieu of flowers, the family is asking that donations in Larry’s memory be made to the Odette Cancer Centre at Sunnybrook Hospital.
Lar, see you down the road. Love you forever and always, Aud
