Born on August 26, 1943, in Moss Point, Mississippi, Amelia was the daughter of John Poe Dodd and Eugina Edwards Dodd. She lived a life marked by dedication to her family, her community, and the pursuit of lifelong learning.
Amelia earned her Bachelor of Arts degree in Hospitality and Tourism from the University of Alabama. Her educational journey was supported in part by a P.E.O. Program for Continuing Education grant, an opportunity she deeply valued. She served for many years as the secretary for the Anthropology Department at the University of Alabama. She later joined the University of Alabama at Birmingham, where she served as Associate Director of Undergraduate Admissions until her retirement.
A dedicated civic and community leader, Amelia was a longtime member of the P.E.O. Sisterhood, where she served in numerous leadership roles, including President. She was also a member of the National Society of Colonial Dames XVII Century and the Daughters of the American Revolution. Additionally, Amelia devoted many years to the Girl Scouts, serving as a leader and mentor.
Beyond her professional and volunteer service, Amelia found joy in sewing, cooking, reading, and spending time outdoors. Friends and family described her as witty, intelligent, and compassionate. She had a gift for storytelling and could always be counted on to share a memorable tale, a thoughtful insight, or a well-timed laugh.
She is survived by her daughters, Carrie Tingle (Alan) and Melissa Mitchell Lancaster (Kevin); her grandsons, Forrest Mitchell Mullins, Matthew Lancaster, and Blake Lancaster; her sisters, Laura Dodd Solomons (Charlie) and Ramona Dodd Beck; and six great-grandchildren.
The family will hold a private Celebration of Life. A graveside service will be held at a later date in Fort Payne, Alabama.
Memorial contributions may be made in Amelia's memory to the American Cancer Society: Alzheimer’s research, V.A. Medical Center Volunteer program for the purchase of personal care items for the veterans, or Chapter I P.E.O. for the Program for Continuing Education.
