Betty Hales "Mrs. J.T. Barnett" Barnett

Northport – Betty Hales Barnett, age 89 of Northport, died Sunday, May 28, 2017 at Hospice of West Alabama. A celebration of life will be at 2:00PM Thursday, June 1, 2017 at Northport Baptist Church with Rev. Brian Hinton and Rev. Matthew Dominy officiating. Burial will follow in Sunset Memorial Park with Sunset Funeral Home, a Dignity Memorial Provider, directing. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church.

Preceded in death by her husband of 55 years, J. T. Barnett; her father Walter Wilbert Hales; her mother May Ester Payne; her sister Mary Ann Binion; her brother Malcolm Hales and her sister Gertrude Petit.

Survivors: Her son, Tom Barnett, of Birmingham and nieces, nephews and cousins.

Biography: Born in Eutaw, Alabama in 1927, Betty Barnett attended Green County High School and business college, in Birmingham. She married J. T. Barnett, of Romulas, in 1947 and they moved to Northport. She is survived by her son, Tom Barnett of Birmingham, and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. She was a member of Northport Baptist Church, where she was Church Clerk for decades, taught Sunday School and Training Union and was an active supporter of youth programs. She worked in the loan department of First Federal Savings & Loan Association and later became Manager of the Northport Branch until her retirement. Succeeding institutions were Alabama Federal, Heritage Federal and Secor. She was Treasurer of the Northport Chamber of Commerce and was the female Citizen of the Year in 1980. She did not miss a PTA meeting while her son was in school and for many years she served as a member of the DCH volunteer auxiliary.

Pallbearers will be Max Davis, Mike Hannah, Byron Sprayberry, Jimmy Glover, Aubrey Dale and Doug Caldwell

Honorary pallbearers: Sonny Booth, John Hinton, Shiela Clements, Patsy Thompson, Jerry Tidmore

In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the Northport Baptist Church for senior ministries or The Rise School of Tuscaloosa at the University of Alabama, helping special needs children.
