

Charles E. "Hawkshaw" Spencer, age 76, went on his heavenly trail ride June 23, 2013, at Hospice of West Alabama. Services will be 11 a.m. today at Beulah Baptist Church with Rev. Jack Clary officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery with Sunset Funeral Home & Cremations, a Dignity Memorial Provider, directing. The body will lie in state one hour prior to services at the church.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Melba L. Spencer; and his parents, Spurgeon L. Spencer and Minnie I. Spencer.
Survivors include his wife, Patsy Walker Spencer; daughter, Danna Burchett (Tommy); son, Chuck Spencer (Lynda); brother, Oscar Spencer; two grandsons; two step-grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews; and two sisters-in-law, Virginia Cadenhead (Bill) and Margaret Pate (Bobby).
Charles was a dedicated father, husband, and a great friend to many. He always enjoyed riding horses and being with all his friends and family.
Pallbearers will be Tommy Burchoff, Lee Friend, Ray Drummond, Gary McGalliard, Bobby Livingston, Chad Spencer, Harold Clayton, John Mize, Carl Suddeth, and Randy Lee.
Honorary pallbearers are Dr. Duffy and staff, Dr. Jones and staff, Dr. Anderson, staff at DCH ICU, Dr. Hughes and staff, all members of the Alabama Trail Riders Association, Lucille and James Carpenter, Alvis Storey, Sam Pate, Stephanie Clines, Freddie Smith, Pam Hollaway and Jane Hollaway.
