James is survived by his wife of 68 years, Wilma Gilliam Townsend, and his daughter, Vanessa Hughes (Louie) of Northport, Alabama; grandchildren: Erin Jett (Josh) and April Hughes (fiancee Dalton Lancaster), both of Northport, Alabama; siblings: Jean Cooksey and Larry Townsend (Vesta) as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
James was preceded in death by his parents, Lucious and Itaska Townsend; siblings: Lucious (Junior) Townsend, Lee Townsend, Melene (Ann) Bonds, Jeanette (Ethel) Tye, Willie Hannah, Rebecca Dennis, Geneva Cooper and other beloved family members and friends.
James loved his family and friends dearly and was well-known for his love of hound dogs and hunting.
James will be laid to rest in a graveside service at 11am on September 15, 2021 at Sunset Funeral Home & Memorial Park in Northport, Alabama.
