

Mattie Mae Hartin Rose, age 102, of Northport, died Feb. 21, 2013, at home. Services will be 3 p.m. Sunday at Northport Baptist Church Chapel with Dr. John A. Nixon officiating. Private family burial will take place in Tuscaloosa Memorial Park with Sunset Funeral Home, a Dignity Memorial Provider, directing. Visitation will be one hour prior to services at the church.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Joe E. Rose; her twin daughters, Jean Rose Shirley and Joan Rose Nicholson; and her son-in-law, John Nicholson Sr.
Survivors include her son, Wayne Rose of Northport; her son-in-law, Hilary Shirley of Northport; her daughter-in-law, Jo Rose of Northport; her grandchildren, Dallas Mueller, Jason Nicholson, Susan Shirley, Mary Katherine White, Joseph Rose, Whitney DuBose, Leah Randolph, and Steven Shirley; and 17 great-grandchildren.
Mrs. Rose was born and raised in Romulus as the oldest of six children. She was raised as a member of Romulus United Methodist Church. She was a 1929 graduate of Tuscaloosa County High School and a member of the first graduating class of nurses at the University of Alabama. She served as a nurse at DCH Regional Medical Center for many years. She spent her adult life in Northport. “Rose,” as she was affectionately called, spent her retirement enjoying her grandchildren, gardening, and being active with the Trailblazers at Northport Baptist Church. She was an active member of the Dorcas-Atkins Sunday School Class at Northport Baptist.
Honorary pallbearers are members of Romulus United Methodist Church and Northport Baptist Church Dorcas-Atkins Sunday School Class and Trailblazers, and her caring sitters, Patty Jean Armstrong, Vera Horton, Maggie Ruffin, Barbara Treadway, and JoAnn Anderson.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Romulus United Methodist Church or Northport Baptist Church Chapel Renovation Fund.
