Robert Jerome Carter

A graveside service will be held Saturday, November 4, 2023 at 11:00 am at Sunset Memorial Park. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at 10:00 am at the funeral home.

Robert, or Jerome as his family called him, was born in Philadelphia, MS on January 12, 1935 to Les and Virgie Carter. Jerome joined the US Air Force in 1953 but returned home to marry his sweetheart Bobbie Davis on December 28, 1953. After living in Denver, CO and Roswell, NM while in the Air Force they settled in Northport in 1957. Jerome was a motorcycle policeman for the City of Northport before joining the Tuscaloosa County Sheriff’s Office in 1969. “Sergeant Carter” retired from law enforcement in 1992 after 23 years of service.

Jerome loved his family more than anything and was very proud of his wife and daughters. He enjoyed the outdoors, especially hunting and camping on his property in north Tuscaloosa County. He also enjoyed telling stories of his time in the military and law enforcement.

Survivors include his daughters Valeria Brown (Billy), and Tywilla Gurganus of Northport; grandchildren Adam Brown (Jennifer) of Austin, TX; Abby Rushing (Brandon) of Northport; Andrew Brown (Angelica) of Northport; Heath Gurganus (Jordan) of Huntsville, AL; and Meagan Gurganus (fiancée Glenn Dillard) of Knoxville, TN; great-grandchildren Ella and Camden Brown, Landyn and Logan Brown, Tyce Rushing, Oliver and Owen Gurganus; and sister Janice Homan (Jack) of Millport, AL and many loving extended family members.

The family appreciates the loving care of his long-time caregiver Kim Bigham, his special nurse Amy of Hospice of West Alabama and neighbors Shannon and Patsy. We also would like to thank his former deputy co-workers for their visits and many stories.

Pallbearers will be Adam Brown, Andrew Brown, Heath Gurganus, Brandon Rushing, Billy Brown and Scott Carter.
