Stella Ruth Gant

.NORTHPORT | Stella Ruth Gant, age 86, of Northport, died February 16, 2014. Services will be 3 p.m. Wednesday, February 19, 2014, at Sunset Funeral Home with Rev. Kenn Spencer officiating. Burial will follow in Sunset Memorial Park with Sunset Funeral Home, a Dignity Memorial Provider, directing. Visitation will be Wednesday from 1 to 3 p.m. at the funeral home. She was preceded in death by her husband, Wilburn Gant; brothers, Giles Gladden, P. Joe Gladden and Johnny Gladden; and mother, Emma Dunn.Survivors include her daughters, Lucinda Kaye Couto of Atlanta, Ga. and her beloved dog "Booger;" son, Dennis Russell Gant of Daytona Beach, Fla.; sister, Myra D. Custred; brother, Jay Dunn; grandchildren, Ashley Draper of Atlanta, Ga., April Couto of Auburn, Kyle Couto of Northport, Holly Gant and Cody Gant of Port Orange, Fla.Mrs. Gant was a native of Walker County and resided in Northport, Alabama for the majority of her life. Mrs. Gant started her career as a child nutritionist in 1969, and retired in 2011 from Northside High School. Mrs. Gant worked at Northside High School for over 35 years. She touched the lives of many during her employment as the CNP manager for Northside. Mrs. Gant was famous for her cheese rolls and her excellent cooking for the students, facility and many others in the community. Mrs. Gant loved her job serving the student at Northside. She was always there ready to support fundraisers, the athletic program and any other organizations dealing with the school. Mrs. Gant was a long time member of Northport Church of Christ and had many beloved friends there who shared Sunday dinners with her each Sunday after service.Mrs. Gant enjoyed Alabama Football, Braves Baseball, cooking and growing flowers. She had the most amazing green thumb and could grow anything. Her love was most apparent when she was around babies and small children. Mrs. Gant has five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. Mrs. Gant lived a full life just as she wanted. She was an independent strong lady who even in her last days ran her own show. She will be missed. Pallbearers will be Kyle Couto, Cody Gant, Peter Gant, Chris Black, Wilson Marler, and Joel Custred.Honorary pallbearers are Tuscaloosa Co. Board of Education, students of Northside High School, facility and staff at Northside High School and Hospice of West Alabama.In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the American Diabetes Association
