Emma Luz "Malou" Gatdula Yabut

Emma Luz Yabut, affectionately known as Malou, passed away peacefully on November 15, 2023 at the age of 65. Born on September 20, 1958, in Tarlac, Tarlac, Philippines to Mariquita and Gerundio Gatdula, Malou was known for her dedication to her family and community, her giving spirit, kindness, and unselfishness.

Malou grew up in Jaro, Iloilo, and finished her education at Central Philippine University. Her deep-rooted passion for family and community naturally led her to a career in nursing, which she loved. Malou's professional journey took her from the Philippines to Saudi Arabia, and ultimately to Los Angeles, where she made significant contributions at Cedars-Sinai, Hollywood Presbyterian, and later at Kaiser Permanente Panorama City. As a revered leader in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, her dedication and skill were instrumental in saving the lives of countless infants and establishing standards of care in the new unit, leaving a lasting legacy in every life she touched. Beyond her professional achievements, Malou had a love for gardening and floral arrangements, and she often shared this joy along with her culinary talents with friends and the community, further enriching the lives of those around her.

Malou was the matriarch of a generation. Emma was a loving soulmate, beloved mother, cherished grandmother, and treasured friend. She is survived by her husband Ric, her kids, Riza, Nicole, and Gerick and her older siblings Solomon, Felipa, and Josefina. She was the cornerstone of her family but also a pillar of strength and inspiration in her community. Her family remembers her as a playful and loving person, who had a special gift for bringing people together and seeing the best in them.

A memorial viewing service will be held on December 1, 2023 from 5:00-9:00 PM at St. Genevieve Parish Church in Panorama City, California. The funeral service will be held the following day at 10:00 AM at the Mission San Fernando Rey de España followed by burial at the San Fernando Mission Catholic Cemetery. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, a gift donation be made to the Yabut family.

Malou’s legacy will live on in the hearts and minds of everyone she interacted with as well as the numerous contributions she made to her community. Her laughter, wisdom, and gentle spirit will be dearly missed by all who knew her.
