Marion Irene Porter
June 11, 1926 – October 15, 2018
Marion I. Porter (Nevins)
Marion passed away in her home on the evening of October 15 surrounded by her family; following a fierce battle against cancer. She was 92. She lived independently following the death of her husband, Bernard (Barney) in 1992.
To her family and friends, she was known as Mugs. Her son-in-law, Steven started calling her Mugs when he was just 16 and dating her daughter, Kathy. He thought Mrs. Porter was too formal and Marion was too familiar. It suited her perfectly.
Born in 1926 in Flushing, NY, Marion was the fourth of 12 children. She was the mother of six, grandmother of 11, great grandmother of 12. And loved dearly by all. After numerous moves and the retirement of her husband from the Navy, they settled in the home they built in 1960 and lived there until her death.
She was a voracious reader, a crossword puzzle solver and a conversation lover . Over the years, she spent time tending to a beautiful rose garden. Up until this year, she walked nearly every morning but Sundays with friends – rain or shine. On those rare raining days in Los Angeles, she relished walking in the rain and splashing in the puddles with her grand and great grandchildren. She always started her walks with dog biscuits and a few dollars in her pocket. The dollars were in case she encountered someone who was in need.
She had a wonderful sense of humor and could relate to all generations. She was a constant support for so many – offering guidance, care and sage advice.
She is survived by her children: Bernard M. Porter, Jr. (San Antonio, TX); Laura Ferris (Canoga Park); Kathleen Grosslight and husband, Steven (Newport Beach); Susan Russell and husband, Bruce (Granada Hills); Mari Anne Mansfield and husband, Charles (Durham, NC); Tom Porter and wife Becky (Newport Beach).
The family will receive visitors at a celebration of her life on Sunday, October 21, 2018 from noon to 3pm at her home.
