“The righteous man walks in his integrity; his children are blessed after him.”
—Proverbs 20:7
There are not enough words to describe the man that Michael Wayne Irving, Sr. was. Simply put, he was one of one. Born on March 12, 1958, in New Orleans, Louisiana, to the late Ethel Irving-Millien and Joseph Elphage II, Michael was the youngest of five brothers, a proud father of seven, and a devoted husband whose life revolved around family, love, and laughter.
To know him was to feel his energy. He cared deeply for others, often putting everyone else before himself. Whether you knew him for a lifetime or just met him once, you felt his warmth, his humor, and his heart. His laugh could fill a room, his presence made every space feel like home, and his ability to connect with anyone was a gift few possess.
A 1978 graduate of Donaldsonville High School, Michael went on to attend the University of Louisiana at Lafayette before spending over 30 years with FedEx. Through every stage of his life, his work ethic, loyalty, and drive spoke volumes about his character and integrity.
But beyond all that, Michael’s true passions were what made him unforgettable: cooking, family, basketball, football, coaching, and a good, very long debate. Cooking was his love language, the way he expressed care and connection. His food didn’t just fill stomachs—it filled souls. He was the hardest coach, the funniest storyteller, and the guy you wanted by your side through any struggle. His competitive spirit, whether playing or coaching, was matched only by the size of his heart off the court.
He also found peace behind the wheel of his cherished vintage Mercedes, windows down, music playing, enjoying the quiet freedom of the drive.
Michael leaves behind his loving wife of 29 years, Denise Irving, and his seven incredible children: Asha, April, Michael Jr. (Smokey), Lauren, Lajon, Hiroshi, and Michael III (Mykee). He was a proud grandfather to Komonta, Ghikil, and Mckenzie; a brother to David Irving (Liz); a godfather to Cheron Michelle Irving-Johnson; and a loyal dog dad to Bullet, with grand-dog Skye always close by. He is also remembered fondly by countless nieces, nephews, family, and friends who will forever carry his spirit in their hearts.
He now joins in eternal rest his parents, Ethel and Willie Millien and Joseph Elphage III; his brothers Byron Irving, Joseph III, Matthew, and James Elphage; his nephew Byron Irving Jr.; and his grandparents Bessie Thompson and George Irving.
Michael’s legacy is one of love, laughter, and generosity. He was the best coach, the best cook, the best friend, the funniest man in any room, and without question, the best father. His spirit will live on in every story told, every meal shared, and every smile he inspired.
Rest in perfect peace, Big Mike, our rock, our heart, and our hero. Your love and your laughter will echo in our memories forever. Though you are no longer with us in body, your spirit will guide us through every step ahead. We love you beyond words and will carry your light, always.
