Mitchell (both preceded in death) was born on January 17, 1926 in Georgetown, Guyana.
Sherbourne, affectionately known as Sherby, Sherbz or Sherry had 7 brothers (all of which
preceded her in death) and one sister. Sherbourne went to sleep at the age of 95 on July 11,
2021.
Sherbourne attended St. James The Less Prep School and Joseph Allen High School in Kitty,
Guyana where she graduated and pursued nursing. Sherbourne was accepted to The General
Nursing Council on November 10, 1955 as a Ward Sister (RN). On May 16, 1957 she was
granted her certificate in Midwifery and worked as a midwife on the obstetrical and maternity
ward at the general hospital in Georgetown, Guyana. She then moved to the United States in
1963 and settled in New Jersey where she continued her nursing career. Her first job was at
Martland Medical Center in Newark, New Jersey. She had three choices of countries to migrate
to...the United Kingdom, Canada and the United States. She chose the United States, even
though her mother preferred the United Kingdom.
Sherby sponsored her Guyanese sweetheart, Winston S. Dettering to come to the States in
1964- they were then married on June 2, 1964. He later preceded her in death.
Sherby was employed at Newark Presbyterian Hospital in the maternity ward, then in the
nursery. Sherby and Winston purchased their first residence in Orange, New Jersey in
1968...later, in 1979, the family would opt for the warmer climate of Canoga Park, CA. Sherby
then began a new journey and made the switch to Geriatrics, taking an RN position at the
Veterans Hospital in Van Nuys, CA. She eventually retired in 1998, but remained active in the
hospital’s union. She was also an active member of the Guyanese Cultural Association and
traveled to many countries. Fun Fact: Sherby attended The World’s Fair in New York in 1964.
Most importantly, Sherby was raised in church. She loved church and was a faithful member for
all of her years. She attended Faith Baptist Church in Canoga Park, and, as an active member,
she made many donations to various evangelistic ministries and participated in activities such
as AWANA, in addition to teaching Sunday School for many years. She read her bible and
prayed fervently every morning and evening. After moving to Apopka, Florida she became a
member of Northside Baptist Church and attended services regularly until she was unable to
continue due to her declining health.
Sherby loved to collect dolls of all kinds. One of her favorites was her prized Princess Diana
doll. She worked her embroidery and loved her pets. She fed all of the cats in the
neighborhood and adopted some. She also had birds and fish. She had a love for gardening
and had a front yard filled with rose bushes and various flowers. She loved to sing as she did
housework and loved poetry and would recite them from beginning to end, no matter how long.
Sherby worked as a night nurse, and before her afternoon nap, she would watch Jeopardy and
Wheel of Fortune, her favorite television shows.
Continuing to cherish her memory is her beloved only sister, Esme Cato, her three children
which she adored...son, John Hamilton Cosmor Mitchell and daughters, Elizabeth Ruth
Dettering and Carolyn Beatrice Warner and her step-son, Orin Ian Castle. Her beloved
grandchildren, Joy Nicole Lozada, Lana Valencia Lozada, Jordan Hamilton Antonio Lozada,
Arlyssa Antia Warner, Ashley Brevil and husband Jerry, Latisha Mitchell, Jessie Mays and
Vanessa Villa, her adopted granddaughter. Her great-grands include, Jeremiah, Jordan, John,
Tania...sisters-in-law and a host of cousins, nieces, nephews and friends, who loved her dearly.
