Carol J. Knighton
February 7, 1952 – November 9, 2020
Oakdale -- Carol J. Knighton, 68, passed away comfortably at home on Monday, Nov. 9, 2020, after suffering from early on-set Alzheimer's for several years. She was born Feb. 7, 1952, in Norwich to Joseph and Sophie (Brokowski) Mrowka. She grew up in Montville and graduated from Montville High School in 1969. Carol was the loving wife of 43yrs to the late James A. Knighton until his passing Nov. 1, 2019. She was also predeceased by her son James (JJ) J. Knighton who passed away July 19, 2018. She is survived by her daughter Jamie Knighton, grandson Ashton and granddaughter Kennedy Knighton. She also leaves behind her older sister Barbara Brown, younger brother Robert and wife Doreen Mrowka, several nieces and nephews and their children. She moved around living in Hawaii and Illinois, eventually returning back to Montville with her husband and two children, where they built their dream home. She retired from the school system where she loved working in the office as a Bookkeeper/Secretary at Charles E. Murphy (then) Jr High and moving to the newly built Leonard J.Tyl Middle School. She was a lover of all animals, having a soft spot for cats and small birds. She enjoyed working outside tending to her flowers, numerous bird feeders and leaving snacks out for other wildlife that wandered into the yard. An avid reader, never without a book tucked away somewhere, a die hard collector of all things Garfield, and never passed up a yard sale or fundraiser. She took pride in volunteering for various community activities such as coaching the VFW little league team when her children were young, a member of the Montville Jr. Woman's Club, and a family effort in helping to coordinate the Montville Fair for several years. Carol also liked attending various political functions in support of her husband who sat on several committees and the town council. After the grandkids were born she enjoyed spending the majority of her time with them and spoiling them every chance she got. There will be no calling hours, a small graveside burial service for family will be held in the coming days at Maplewood Cemetery in Norwich. Due to the current Coronavirus concerns, she would not have wanted to put family and friends at risk, a memorial service may be held in the future when it is safer to do so. In lieu of flowers, cards are requested to be sent with a favorite memory or story of my mother included. Donations may also be made in all of the family's memory to help with the cost of a gravestone to Jamie Knighton, 69 Velgouse Rd., Oakdale Ct. 06370. Services are being handled by Montville Church and Allen Funeral Home (https://www.dignitymemorial.com/funeral-homes/uncasville-ct/montville-funeral-home-of-church-allen/2080).
