Chris, as he was known to most, was born August 25, 1941 in Philadelphia to Christopher and Elisabeth (Gasparon) Frye and attended Central High School and then Lincoln High School before joining the Naval Reserves in 1958. From there, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy at the Naval Submarine Base New London and began his submarine service on the USS Tullibee in 1960. He then enrolled in the NESEP Program at the University of Missouri, Columbia before continuing to proudly serve our country with assignments on the USS Grenadier and the USS John Marshall Blue Crew, followed by MOTU-4 shore duty before time spent on the USS Billfish. He retired from active duty on the Leonard P. Lipscomb in Groton, CT on July 16, 1979.
Upon the completion of his military service, Chris attended the University of New Haven and obtained a degree in Business Administration before embarking on his second career at Sonalysts in Waterford, CT. When he wasn’t in the garage working on his cars, you’d find him volunteering at Lawrence Memorial Hospital, Habitat for Humanity or tutoring students at Read and Feed in NC. He enjoyed traveling near and far with his wife Olga, spending countless hours boating and waterskiing with family and sharing his love of history with those around him. In their latter years, Chris and Olga split their time between their beloved house in CT and their home in Fuquay-Varina, NC.
Chris was preceded in death by his son Christopher Lawrence III (Denise), his parents, his stepmother Lucy Frye and stepfather Edward McCormick. He is survived by his cherished wife of 62 years, Olga (Izganics) Frye, daughter Carol, sons Charles (Susie) and Robert (Jessica) and brothers Roger and Richard (Angela). “GPop” will be lovingly remembered by his 10 grandchildren and six great grandchildren; all his greatest joys in life. He will be sorely missed by his family and friends. A service to honor Chris’s life will be held at the Church and Allen Funeral Home, 136 Sachem Street, Norwich on Sunday, December 5 from 1-3pm. Burial will be private for the family. Please visit www.churchandallen.com for additional information.
