Christopher L. Frye III

November 26, 1959July 13, 2020

Voluntown- Christopher Lawrence Frye III passed away peacefully in his Voluntown home Monday, July 13th. He was surrounded by family and love.

Christopher (known by many as CJ) graduated from Ledyard High School in 1978 and was a true jack of all trades, starting his career as an engineer on the Sabino steamboat in the Mystic Seaport. He would go on to acquire and hold licenses in three major fields all at once (electrical, plumbing and carpentry) and still found the time to pursue his main passion.. racing!!! Well known for driving the Orange and Yellow Gordon Rodgers 6X car, Chris ended up winning track championships at the Waterford Speedbowl and Thompson and Stafford motor speedways, the latter two in the same year, which many said could not be done!!! But as tenacious as he was on the track, off the track he was a loving, kind family man.

He is survived by his parents Christopher and Olga Frye, his loving wife Denise, his children Stephanie (Daniel) and Chris IV (Elizabeth) as well as his stepchildren Patrick (Felisha) and Michelle. He will be lovingly remembered by his siblings Carol, Charles (Susie) and Rob (Jessica) as well as his grandchildren, Selene and Chris V, and by his nieces and nephews.

Chris had a personality bigger than life and a sense of humor to match. He was the consummate life of the party and valued the beauty in everything. He enjoyed his quiet life on his ranch in Voluntown with his wife Denise, where he did everything from raising farm life, splitting wood, reading scripture, and his favorite pastime; sitting on his deck watching the birds fly by. Although he will be sorely missed by his family, we find peace knowing he is now home with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

Funeral service will be private for the family.

Condolences to the Frye family. Didn't know C.J. personally, but he was one of my favorite drivers. Clean is the word here! I had always wondered why, after his last season he never came back. Missed seeing him on the track.

Opening day at Waterford Speedbowl when Chris ran his first race in #43. His passion for racing was just getting traction. What an awesome year that was!

So many memories to cherish. RIP!

Dear Frye Family,

So sorry for your loss. CJ and Flash were probably two of the best racers I ever raced against. Rest in peace driver.

To the Family of CJ,

I was very sad to hear of the passing of CJ. I worked with CJ 20+ years ago when we were both working for the Town of Stonington. CJ was a smart guy and his mechanical abilities were second to none. CJ had a great sense of humor and always had us laughing because of his unique way at looking at things. I also remember the racing days with the 6X car at Waterford and after that we would trek up to Thompson on Thursday nights when he raced pro stock. My condolences to all of you and God Bless.

Dear Frye Family, Please accept our heartfelt sympathy on the loss of Christopher. We have joined you in our prayers for a long time. I hope you are finding comfort in knowing that he is at peace. We met him on the day he married Jess and Rob....truly a special and sincere man with a good sense of humor. There simply are no words, except perhaps to share our favorite verse I found in my mother's night table after she passed away.....It is a Waters Family treasure and how we remember my folks....I am sure this is appropriate for your family as well.....so I will share it below. God be with you all, now and forever. With love, Jane and George Andresen (a.k.a. Aunt Jane & Uncle G eorge)

After Glow

I’d like the memory of me
to be a happy one.
I’d like to leave an afterglow
of smiles when life is done.

I’d like to leave an echo
whispering softly down the ways,
Of happy times and laughing times
and bright and sunny days.

I’d like the tears of those who grieve
to dry before the sun,
of happy memories that I leave
when life is done.

I am so sorry to hear about Chris. He was older than I was, and my brother was on his pit crew one year at the track when I was a kid (my maiden name is Buttermore). I had such a crush on Chris!!! I'm so sorry to hear of his passing. I'm thinking of him and the family.
