

Betty was born on July 15, 1934 at Backus Hospital to Leonard and Rachel (Pierce) Chapman, and spent most of her childhood in Preston. Following graduation from NFA, she attended The William W Backus Hospital School of Nursing, earning her RN in 1956, which she maintained until her passing. Betty worked for the United Workers of Norwich (later known as United Community and Family Services) for 50 years before retiring. She married Antoine (“Tony”) Bassette on September 8, 1956 at Sacred Heart Church in Norwichtown. After a short stay in Norwich, the couple moved to a home they built in Preston, where they spent the remainder of their days.
Betty had been an active member of the Preston City Congregational Church since childhood. In addition, she volunteered at St. Catherine of Sienna Church, and as a member of the Preston City Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary. After her retirement, she volunteered her medical skills reading blood pressures at the Preston Senior Center, and served as a Senior Affairs Municipal Official in the Town of Preston for many years.
Betty is survived by her family: son Antoine Bassette, Jr and his wife Tara; son Rodney Bassette; brother Robert Chapman; niece Beth Van Pelt; Beth’s daughter Erin and her husband Matthew Penney, and their two daughters. All were a delight to Betty.
There are no calling hours/wake. A funeral service will be held Saturday, June 27, 2026 at 11a.m. at the Preston City Congregational Church at 321 Route 164 in Preston, with burial at the Preston City Cemetery, followed by a reception at the Church. A memorial table will be available for those who wish to share photos or other memorabilia. During this period of mourning, the family respectively requests that the community kindly refrain from visits, flowers or food delivered to Betty’s home. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to the Preston City Congregational Church.
