Elizabeth Anne Norman, known to most as Betty, passed away peacefully in her sleep on May 23, 2026, at her home on Norman Road. She was 90 years old.
Born on February 19, 1936, and raised on George Palmer Road in Griswold, Connecticut, Betty was a lifelong member of the community that shaped her. The daughter of George and Lucy Palmer and sister of Mary Medbery (all of whom predeceased her), Betty graduated from Griswold High School in 1954 and began her career as a teller at Jewett City Savings Bank, where she worked for seven years before turning her focus to her home, her family, and her community.
In July 1960, she married Ernest Norman, beginning a partnership that spanned more than six decades. Together they raised three children — Anne Guillemette, George Norman (and his wife Arwen), and Glen Norman (and his wife Jennifer) — to whom she was deeply devoted. Betty also played an important role in helping manage the finances of the family’s dairy farm, bringing her steady hand and practical sense to the daily operations. She took great pride in her five grandchildren, who added joy and energy to her later years. She is also survived by her cousin Doris Gifford.
Betty’s dedication to community service was a defining part of her life. She was a steadfast member of the Pachaug Grange, serving as secretary for more than 60 years, where her reliability and quiet leadership became part of the organization’s foundation. Her faith was equally central to her life. At the First Congregational Church of Griswold, she served in numerous capacities over the years, including Church School Superintendent, Clerk, and member of the Board of Deacons. Her commitment, humility, and willingness to step in wherever needed left a lasting impact on all who served with her.
Betty will be remembered for her gentle nature, her sense of humor, her lifelong devotion to service, and the many ways she strengthened the community she loved. There will be a funeral at First Congregational Church (878 Voluntown Rd) to celebrate her life on June 2nd at 2pm. Donations in lieu of flowers can be made to First Congregational Church of Griswold.
