Jerald "Jerry" Navick passed away on July 5, 2026 at the age of 88. Born on August 25, 1937 to Walter and Katie Navick in the Greeneville section of Norwich — the neighborhood he would call home his entire life — Jerry grew into a true family man defined by his deep roots, his abiding love of community, and a quick wit that could light up any room.
Jerry was a graduate of NFA's Class of 1955, where he was recognized as class dancer — a hint of the personality that would endear him to everyone he met throughout his life. He attended Boston University for two years before serving in the United States Army, stationed at Fort Dix — where he met Elvis.
In business, Jerry was a partner at The Leader Store, the family-owned institution in Greeneville that has anchored the neighborhood since 1910. His involvement in the community extended far beyond the store. He served as the first PTO President at NFA, as a Corporator and Trustee of NFA, as a Director of Eastern Bank, and as President and Board Member of Beth Jacob. He also served on the Norwich Pension Board and was an Elks member.
But ask anyone who knew Jerry, and the titles would come second. He was, above all else, a people person — the kind of man who made everyone he met feel immediately at ease, whether a lifelong friend or a perfect stranger. He had an easy warmth, a distinct laugh you could pick out from across a room, and, in the same breath, a sharp sense of humor that kept people on their toes. A wise guy, in the best possible sense.
For years, Jerry was an avid bridge player. When macular degeneration curtailed the card games and crossword puzzles, his spirit never dimmed. He turned his attention to cheering on the UConn Women's Basketball team.
Jerry loved to travel, stretching as far as Australia and New Zealand. His happiest trip was celebrating his and Gail's 50th wedding anniversary with their whole family.
Wednesday mornings held a special place in Jerry's week. For years, he looked forward to gathering with a group of men at Dixie Doughnuts — the kind of camaraderie that doesn't need a reason beyond good company and a cup of coffee.
Most importantly, Jerry cherished his family. Nothing gave him more pride than the accomplishments of his children and grandchildren, and no role meant more to him than the one he played at home.
He is survived by his wife of nearly 61 years, Gail Gordon Navick, the love of his life; his son David Navick and daughter-in-law Tara, and their children Lindsay and Morgan; his daughter Stephanie Bordeau and her children Evan and Brooke; his son Stephen Navick and his children Jacobey and Nadia; his brother Murray Navick; and his brother-in-law Glenn Gordon and his wife Nancy, and their children Daniel and Jared. He was preceded in death by his parents, Walter and Katie Navick.
Per Jerry's wishes, his funeral will be private. In his spirit of generosity, those who are so inclined are encouraged to make a charitable donation to help someone in need.
