Jonathan Charles Gilman, 73, of Gilman, Connecticut, died unexpectedly at home on October 9, 2026. Born in Norwich, CT on July 30, 1953, he was the oldest son born to Mary Jane Evans and Charles M. Gilman.
Jonathan graduated from The Governor’s Academy in Byfield, MA, and Baldwin Wallace University in Ohio with a degree in Political Science.
Following graduation, he returned to Connecticut with his wife, Beverly, and began a career in the insurance industry, first with Connecticut General and later with CIGNA. His independent spirit and determination later led him to establish his own financial services business. He would also go on to get his MBA.
Public service and politics were among Jonathan's greatest passions. He loved his country, his state, and especially his hometown of Bozrah. He believed strongly in civic engagement and the responsibility of individuals to participate in shaping their communities, hence his involvement with Grassroots East and Rotary. He served for many years on various boards and committees in the town. He especially loved planning the town’s yearly Memorial Day Parade.
Jonathan's commitment to service extended well beyond politics. He was a proud member of Somerset-St. James Lodge, where he served two terms as Master of the Lodge. His involvement in Freemasonry reflected his dedication to fellowship, leadership, and service to others. When his sons were young, Jonathan also served as a Boy Scout leader, generously giving his time to mentoring and encouraging young people.
Jonathan was a man of sharp intellect, quick wit, and strong opinions. Outspoken and never one to shy away from a spirited debate, he especially enjoyed conversations about politics and history. A remarkable history enthusiast, he possessed an impressive knowledge of historical events and an extraordinary ability to recall facts and details.
He loved chess and board games, bringing his competitive spirit to every match. He appreciated a good strategy, enjoyed a challenge, and was rarely one to concede without a fight. His quick wit, humor, and willingness to speak his mind made conversations with him anything but dull.
Among the special joys in Jonathan's life were his two sons and his beloved grandson, Bennett, who held a particularly dear place in his heart.
Jonathan was predeceased by his parents, Mary Jane "MJ" and Charles "Bud" Gilman. He is survived by his former wife, Beverly; his sons, Nathan Gilman (Alisha) and Nicholas Gilman; and his cherished grandson, Bennett. He also leaves behind his seven siblings, Kate Gilman, Amy Kazakidis (Manos), Meg Gilman, Evan Gilman, Cyrus Gilman (Kristine), Charles Gilman Jr., and Sara Gilman Mallari (Jay), along with 13 nieces and nephews, 3 great nieces, and one great nephew.
Jonathan will be remembered for his intelligence, his unmistakable wit, his strong convictions, and his unwavering pride in his family and community. He believed in knowing where you came from, standing up for what you believed in, and giving back to the place you called home. From the village his grandparents founded to the community he served throughout his life, Jonathan carried forward a family legacy of connection, commitment, and service. His presence, his opinions, his humor, and his willingness to lend a hand will be deeply missed by those who knew and loved him.
