Ledyard- Joseph Normand Chartier, age 91, passed away at his daughter's home in Ledyard on August 11, 2022. He was born on November 17, 1930 in Pawtucket, Rhode Island to the late Hosanna and Alexina Chartier. He was married to Cecile (Bessette) Chartier who predeceased him in 1999. They had formerly lived in Uncasville where they raised their seven children.
Joseph was a Marine Corp veteran, serving in the Korean War. Later he worked as a Marine Draftsman at Electric Boat for 40 years.
He deeply loved his wife and children and is survived by daughter Linda Harris of Ledyard, CT; son Alan Chartier of Willimantic, CT; daughter Beverly Dupuis of Wilton, NH; daughter Monica Duplice of Lisbon, CT; son Kenneth Chartier of Waterford, CT; son Stephen Chartier of Sebastian, FL; and daughter Carolyn Ward of Ignacio, CO along with their spouses. He also leaves behind 24 grandchildren and 27 great grandchildren.
Joseph had amazing wood working skills and he loved to make beautiful things. We all enjoyed the fruits of his labors, the beautiful pool deck, the lovely wooden glider, and much more.
His greatest passion was RVing which sent them out as full time travelers upon retirement. Sadly, those adventures only lasted a few years until Cecile passed away. After that he mainly traveled between his children’s homes, living in his RV for as long as he was able.
Once traveling became too difficult he took turns living with his various children. He spent a lot of time reminiscing about the past, sharing his RV stories and continuing his other passion, playing cards. He played almost to the end, even when he forgot whose turn it was, and everyone else had to do all the dealing, and even though he struggled with holding the cards themselves, all of these challenges didn’t matter. He could still beat us all and he took great pleasure in doing it.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in memory of Joseph to Beacon Hospice, 111 Founders Plaza, Ste 1802, East Hartford, CT 06108
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. John Church, Maple Ave. Uncasville on Friday, August 19th at 10:00 AM. Burial will immediately follow at St. Patrick Cemetery, Depot Road, Uncasville with full military honors.
