Leatrice R. (Libby) Oberman, age 91, formerly of Norwich, CT, passed away peacefully on October 29, 2026 at Skybrooke Assisted Living in Simsbury, CT. Born on March 30, 1935 in Worcester, MA, Libby was the daughter of the late Rose (Breitborde) Simon and Max Simon. She was a 1952 graduate of Classical High School in Worcester and attended Becker Junior College, where she earned her certificate in secretarial studies in 1953.
A devoted wife, mother, daughter, sister, grandmother, great grandmother, aunt, and great aunt -- family mattered most to Libby. She married the love of her life, Jacob (Jack) Oberman on August 26, 1956. Jack operated a clothing business in Plainfield, CT for many years; Libby would assist with customer service and sales. Together, Libby and Jack raised three children and were married for nearly 47 years prior to Jack’s passing in 2003. Libby also worked in retail sales at Reid & Hughes in Norwich and at Macy’s in the Crystal Mall, Waterford, CT.
In addition to spending time with her family, Libby enjoyed caring for her flower gardens and cooking traditional Jewish food like matzoh ball soup, chremslach, brisket and sweet noodle kugel. She baked a signature sour cream coffee cake that elicited “chef’s kisses” of pure happiness from family and friends. As a literacy volunteer in the Norwich public schools, Libby helped elementary students with reading. She was a member of Beth Jacob Synagogue and Hadassah.
Libby was preceded in death by her husband, Jack Oberman; her eldest son, Howard Oberman; her sister, Janice Simon; and her son-in-law, Stephen Rosenfield. Libby is survived by her daughter, Cheryl (Oberman) Rosenfield of Bloomfield, CT; her son, David Oberman (partner of Dee Daniels) of Pawcatuck, CT; her granddaughter, Andrea (Rosenfield) Short (married to Tyler) and their sons, Parker Stephen Short and Rhett Thomas Short of Simsbury, CT; a grandson, Eric Rosenfield of Bloomfield, CT; a daughter-in-law, Betty (Obertello) Oberman of Mystic, CT; and a brother, Eddie Simon (married to Millie) of Quaker Hill, CT.
The Oberman/Rosenfield/Simon family is exceedingly grateful to the nurses and caregivers at Skybrooke Assisted Living in Simsbury, as well as the supportive nursing and social work staff at AccentCare Hospice for their dedication and compassionate care.
