After graduating from Ansonia High School in 1964, Lois attended the Saint Vincent School of Nursing. She completed her program in 1967 and soon after she received her license as a Registered Nurse. She worked as a RN at Backus Hospital for more than 40 years, spending the latter part of her career working on the maternity ward where she helped thousands of babies enter the world. Even after she retired she maintained her nursing license “just in case” she ever needed it again. She loved being a nurse and left a lasting impression on the people she encountered. Her co-workers became life-long friends and she cherished those relationships. She loved their regular outings and was thrilled that they were able to finally be together again several weeks ago.
Family was her greatest joy and love. She married Richard Carr, Sr. on November 28, 1968 and together they built a loving home and successful life. Lois cherished time spent with those she held most dear. She loved fiercely and would do anything for her family. She loved being a mother, but her true joy was being a grandmother. Nothing made her happier than spending time with and creating lasting memories with her granddaughters, except maybe spoiling them. Lois also enjoyed going on adventures with her beloved sister-in-law, Deb. It was not unusual for them to end up in another state just because they wanted to see where a road led. Family was truly her world.
Lois will be remembered by those that loved her for her kindness, generosity and big heart. She relished her role as a caretaker and was always willing to help- whether that meant coming into work early, feeding stray cats, helping out at school, providing a ride, telling a story or just lending a supportive ear. Lois will also be remembered for her beautiful gardens that she spent hours taking care of, as well as her love of dinosaurs, Disney, and Birkenstocks.
To cherish the memories, Lois leaves behind a family that adores her. Her husband of 52 years Richard and her beloved children, Richard, Jr (Nicole Yolda) and Vivian (Steve Cole) as well as her adoring granddaughters Devyn and Brielle. She also leaves her brother Victor Szatkowski (Laura); beloved in-laws Richard and Deborah Gardner, and several nieces and nephews.
