She was born in St. Joseph’s, New Brunswick, Canada on Nov. 26, 1919 to the late Emile and Euclida (Belliveau) Gaudet. She was a member of the “Greatest Generation” coming to the United States in 1940 to help build a better life for her younger siblings. She and her sister worked as domestic help and like many of the French Canadians in the area, she worked in the mills. It was during this time she and her sister purchased a house in Norwich, a rare event for young single women at the time. The house at 41 Grove St. became the home base for the rest of the family and the site of holiday gatherings for over 60 years. Marie later worked and retired as a psychiatric aid at the Norwich State Hospital.
Late in life, Marie was cared for by her great-nephew Mike Johnson and Chandra Delaney in Norwell, MA. She loved cooking, sewing, music, movies, wine, discussing current events and being with her family. She was known for her humor, kindness and compassion.
Marie was one of five including brothers; Euclin, Joseph and Paul Gaudet, and a sister; Emily Fortin, nieces and nephews; Mark Gaudet, Denise Fontaine, Gisele Gaudet, Rose Gaudrerau, Susan Perkins, Debbie Gaudet, Paul Gaudet Jr., several great nieces and nephews and several great great nieces and nephews and several cousins in Canada.
A graveside service will be held on Wednesday, Feb. 13th at 10am at St.. Joseph Cemetery, Boswell Ave., Norwich, CT. There are no calling hours.
