Rucker- Marion Garfield Rucker Jr. peacefully departed this life on July 28, 2021 at the WW. Backus Hospital after a brief hospitalization. Marion known as Garfield was born May 24, 1935 in Belton, SC. He was predeceased by his parents Marion Garfield Sr. and Rutah Simmons Rucker, and a daughter Tina Rutah Wilson. Marion joined the US. Navy at an early age, and after serving four years, he was honorably discharged from the US Submarine Base, Groton CT. Completing his education he later graduated from Norwich Technical High School as an electrician. He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Carrie, his sons Marion Garfield III (Michelle), James Anthony (Delya) and Irving Matchen, 6 grandchildren, a sister, 3 aunts, and numerous cousins. Marion was an active member of his church, Evans Memorial AME Zion Church of Norwich, where he was a chairman of the Board of Trustees, and a member of the Men’s Choir. He was employed at Electric Boat of General Dynamics as an Outside Electrician; and then promoted to Electrical Design Draftsman on Tridents, and Fast Track Submarines retiring after 34 years. He was very active in the community, a member of Jepthah Lodge #11, and Prince Hall of CT. He was a life member of the NAACP and past president of the Norwich Branch, a Chairperson of the Board of Trustees of TVCCA, and a member the Norwich Board of Education. He was the Relocation Director of the City of Norwich, Board of Director of the Dr. Martin Luther King Center, President and Permittee of Sportsman AC, and Secretary/ Business Agent of Amalgamated Transit Union Local 1348. As a community activist, he also ran for the Norwich City Council. Ever the athlete he loved and played softball for Sportsmans, played racquetball. He loved the Dodgers. Visitation will be Saturday August 7, 2021 at the Evans Memorial AME Zion Church 2 McKinley Ave, Norwich, at 10:00 am. His Home Going Service will be at 11:00 am at the Church. Burial will follow in Maplewood Cemetery Norwich. In keeping with guidelines issued by the State of CT, masks will be required inside the Church.
