Mary Elizabeth grew up in New London. The Shea family was well known at that time for their generosity and contributions to the New London community following their arrival from County Kerry, Ireland.
Mary was very proud to have served as a Federal Employee working under Rep. Chase Going Woodhouse, at the Submarine Base in Groton (she was one of the first people to learn of the sinking of the USS Thresher) and Defense Investigators, also in Groton.
After her retirement, Mary Elizabeth enjoyed long daily walks at Connecticut College and Harkness, traveling, music, writing poetry and being in the company of her beloved pets.
She is survived by her daughter, Ellen McMahon and her husband James, grandchildren Victoria DiMella (Robert) of Princeton, NJ., William Henderson (Donna) of Mt. Pleasant, SC., Daniel Henderson (Emily) of Colchester, Ct., Shawn McMahon of Marlborough, Ct., and six great-grandchildren, Lauren, Michaela, Katherine, David, Alexander and Andrew.
Funeral Services are private.
Memorial donations may be made to the Waterford Animal Shelter and Hospice.
Very special thanks to Dr. Edward McDermott who was always available to Mary Elizabeth and her family. She was extremely grateful to be in his care. Thank you also to the entire staff of Fairview Nursing Home and Hospice, for their extraordinary care and compassion.
“May you live a long life full of gladness and health
With a pocketful of gold as the least of your wealth.
May the dreams you hold dearest be those which come true
May the kindness you spread keep returning to you.”
