

Olavo Lobo Gomes, 90, of Norwich, Connecticut, loving husband of Antonia (Rodrigues) Gomes, was called home Sunday January 7, 2024, surrounded by his loving family. He was born January 17, 1933 in Fogo, Cape Verde Islands, son of the late Jose Lobo Gomes and Amelia Vaz Mendes.
Olavo was one of the hardest working men and worked most of his life as a Laborer at Gonsalves & Son Construction Co. He was also passionate about his gardening and sharing the fruits of his labor with his family. Olavo was a devoted father and family man to his large family. He leaves behind a legacy of kindness, generosity, laughter, and the happiest of memories. His light continues to shine through the many lives he touched.
He was married to Antonia Gomes for 57 years. In addition to Antonia, he is survived by his six children: Ilda (Manuel) Mendes of Boston, MA Helena DePina of Norwich, Ildo Gomes of Norwich, Domingos Gomes of Norwich, Julio Gomes (Melanie) of Danielson, CT and Tony Gomes of Norwich. He was proud to be a Dad but even more loved being a Grandfather and Great-Grandfather to his ten grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his sister Maria Montrond of Brockton, MA and his brother Antero Gomes of Quincy, MA. Olavo was a loving uncle, friend, and extremely proud of his Cape Verdean heritage.
Calling hours will be on Friday, January 12, from 5-8pm at Church & Allen Funeral Services, 136 Sachem St, Norwich. A funeral service will be on Saturday, January 13, at 9:30am at the funeral home followed by an immediate burial at 10am at St. Joseph's Cemetery, 815 Boswell Ave., in Norwich. The family welcomes loved ones and friends to a light reception at Maennerchor Club, 39 Maennerchor Ave, Taftville, CT after burial.
