

He attended the Norwich School System through high school, graduating from NFA with the class of 1944. After graduating, Raymond enlisted in the U.S. Navy, and after completing basic training, trained as a machinist at Great Lakes Naval Station. Raymond served on a destroyer in the Pacific Theater until the war's end, then continued his service on a cargo ship until his discharge.
Raymond worked for the State of Connecticut Transportation Department from 1946 to his retirement in 1989 with 43 years of state service, beginning as a surveyor and serving as District Drainage Engineer from 1963 until his retirement. Raymond was an accomplished musician, performing on the cordovox and teaching accordion for many years. Leading the Mel-O-Tones Orchestra from the time of high school for approximately 45 years, he was well known to those who attended local weddings and dances. An expert tinkerer, he resurrected innumerable deceased power tools, turned beautiful wooden creations and sharpened many saw blades and scissors for the locals aware of his skills. Known also by many as the "Christmas Tree Man," he tended to his trees and beautiful gardens for as many years as he lived in Preston. Raymond's family would like to extend their thanks to the excellent care givers from Assured Quality Homecare, Center for Hospice Care of Southeast Connecticut, and his granddaughter, Amy.
Raymond was predeceased by his wife, Winona (Luce) to whom he was married for 46 years. Raymond is survived by his children and their spouses, Raymond (Paula) of Voluntown, CT , William (Lori)of Oakdale, CT, and Kathryn Williams (Dale)of North Stonington, CT. Raymond was grandpa to his six grandchildren, Alyssa Garner, Ian Thiel, Michael Thiel, Amy Williams, Christopher Williams, and Timothy Williams, and great-grandpa to 6 little ones. Ray is also survived by his faithful friend, Patricia Bryant.
There will be a graveside service at 10:00a.m. on Thursday, January 26 at Maplewood Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to a charity of personal choice.
