

Richard attended Howells School through the eighth grade before graduating from Middletown High School with the Class of 1966. Following graduation, he proudly enlisted in the United States Navy. During his military service, he served aboard both the USS St. Paul and the USS Canberra during the Vietnam War. He later was stationed at the Naval Submarine Base in Groton, Connecticut, where he completed his service before receiving an honorable discharge in 1972.
After his military service, Richard built a long career as a skilled meat cutter, working for various supermarkets before joining Salem Prime Cuts in the 1990s, where he remained until his health no longer allowed him to continue. He was known for his remarkable work ethic, taking great pride in every job he did and earning the respect of coworkers and customers alike through his dedication, skill, and reliability.
In 1974, Richard married Deborah (Carr) Gardner of Norwich. Together they shared 51 wonderful years of marriage and raised two children, Steven and Erin.
Richard was a man of many talents and simple joys. He loved fishing, woodworking, gardening, and spending time outdoors. He took special delight in filling his yard with bird feeders and watching the wide variety of birds that visited his home in Norwich. Gifted with his hands, Richard could build, repair, or improve just about anything. Whether it was a home improvement project, fixing something that was broken, or lending a hand in the yard, he was always there for his children. Acts of service were one of the many ways he expressed his love, and his willingness to help never wavered.
Richard will also be remembered for his wonderful sense of humor, his infectious laugh, and his ability to make those around him smile. His warmth, kindness, and easygoing nature made him someone people naturally enjoyed being around. He leaves behind countless memories of laughter, quiet wisdom, and unwavering support that his family will cherish forever.
Richard is survived by his wife, Deborah Gardner; his brother, Wayne Gardner; his son, Steven Gardner and his wife, Davina Dube; his daughter, Erin Gardner-Flores and her husband, Jose Flores; and his three cherished grandchildren.
He was predeceased by his parents, Russell and Charlotte Gardner, and his brother, Steven Gardner.
Richard's life was defined by love, hard work, service to his country, and unwavering devotion to his family. He leaves behind a legacy of integrity, generosity, laughter, and quiet strength. He will be deeply missed, forever loved, and fondly remembered by his family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing him.
Visitation will be Monday July 27, 2026 from 10-11 am. at the Church and Allen Funeral Home 136 Sachem Street Norwich.
Burial will follow in Maplewood Cemetery Norwich.
