Richard A. Rablen PhD

Richard A. Rablen, PhD (91) of Norwich, passed away at home on March 27, 2022 after a long battle with metastatic melanoma. He leaves behind his loving wife Carolyn; and two children, Paul and Kathryn. Richard or “Dick” was a beloved husband and father, and devoted psychotherapist, with a passion for classical piano music, and contagious excitement for life. Words can hardly express his kind, compassionate and wise nature, or his ever-present wit and playful sense of humor.

Born in Auburn, NY, he graduated Phi Beta Kappa from Depauw University, before receiving his PhD from the University of Wisconsin, where he also served as research assistant to Carl Rogers and developed his humanistic approach to psychotherapy.

Before coming to Norwich, he worked in the Psychology Department of Worcester State Hospital (1960-1969) as a clinical psychologist and Director of Training. While in Worcester, he also taught at Leicester Junior College, Memorial Hospital School of Nursing and as an adjunct professor at Clark University. In 1969, Richard moved to Norwich to serve as the Director of the United Community Services Mental Health Clinic for Children and Families for 25 years from 1970 to 1995. In 1995, he had planned to retire, but having always maintained a private psychotherapy practice, he continued to engage in psychotherapy on a part time basis until his 85th year. Richard was dedicated to the well-being of his patients, and would have continued his work if not for medical issues in 2016 which forced him to retire.

Equal to his love of family and work, he also loved two piano music and spent hours practicing with his wife and others. Although an accomplished pianist, he was fond of engaging anyone who could play in a session of music, and finding public venues in which he could perform with those of equal caliber to himself.
