
Norwich- Selma Swatsburg passed away October 17, 2010. She was born July 7, 1916, the daughter of the late Edith Lena Sadinsky and Aleck Silverman. She was married to Harry Swatsburg on October 3, 1943.
She was a graduate of Norwich Free Academy, Class of 1934, and Connecticut College, Class of 1938. She completed her Internship under the American Dietetic Association; she was a staff Dietician at Beth Israel Hospital, Newark, NJ. She was a Nutrition Consultant for State Dept. of Health, Hartford, CT. She taught Nutrition at the Yale School of Nursing and served as Consultant Dietitian in the Pre-Natal Clinic at Yale New Haven Hospital. She volunteered at Lyman Allyn Museum at the Admissions Desk, and then later was in charge of the publicity scrapbook and all that it entailed for 15 years. She worked with her husband “Uncle Harry” at Uncas Pharmacy. She was a life member of the American Dietetic Association, and Brothers of Joseph Synagogue.
She bequeathed the sum of ten thousand dollars to Connecticut College of New London, CT. This legacy is made in her memory and shall be used to provide financial assistance to needy students. She was a member of the Slater Museum for 40 years.
Harry and Selma donated to the Otis Library a new published sixteen volume set of the Encyclopedia Judaica for the use of the general public. Selma and Harry bequeath to the Norwich Free Academy a scholarship to be awarded annually; they presented a gift to the Norwich Free Academy for a garden at the Latham Science Center, as the “Harry and Selma Swatsburg Garden.
Selma and Harry established the Scholarship Fund at the University Of Connecticut School Of Pharmacy to be used to provide financial help for students support and on March 28, 2007 received a plaque in appreciation for their continued commitment to the University Of Connecticut School Of Pharmacy.
In addition to her husband Harry, Selma is survived by many nieces and nephews, Terri Mendoza, Peter Swatsburg, Judy Simon, David Silverman, Lauren Babus, Brian Grodner, Richard Grodner and Robert Grodner.
In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her brother Calvin Silverman, sister Ceil Grodner and nephew Martin Silverman.
A funeral service will be held at the Church and Allen Funeral Home, today, Tuesday, October 19, 2010 at 11 am. Burial will follow in Hebrew Benevolent Cemetery #1 in Preston.
