

He was born November 13, 1950 in Norwich, the son of the late Arthur S. and Annabelle M. Alquist. He grew up in Montville, attending local schools. He was a star athlete at Montville High School at URI. After graduation from Montville High School in 1968, he attended the University of Rhode Island graduating in 1972 with a degree in Physical Education. He taught physical education in Montville schools for 10 years. He was also head basketball coach and assistant football coach at Montville High School. He lead his Montville High School team to the ECC Championship.
After leaving teaching, he became part owner of the Brown Derby Bar & Restaurant. He worked in all capacities of the business for over 30 years. Also during this time, he was associate head coach for Basketball at St. Thomas More School for 22 years.
For many years, he vacationed Gulfport, FL where his family had a home. One of his favorite spots to visit was Ft. DeSoto in St. Petersburg, FL where he enjoyed miles of endless surf and sand.
In his free time, Tom played golf with his brother, Butch and a group of close friends. He also loved to go out on his boat at Lake Oxoboxo and entertain at his lakeside home. He was an avid Tampa Bay Rays and Bucs fan. He was also a member of the Montville Polish Club.
In addition to his beloved wife Vickie, he is survived by his brother Arthur (Butch) Alquist and wife Pat, sister Sally Palmer and husband Roger, step daughter Carie Bernard and by nephews Christopher and Adam Alquist.
Calling hours will be held at the Montville Funeral Home of Church and Allen on Sunday, March 16, 2014 from 3 to 7 pm.
A funeral service will be held Monday at the Montville Funeral Home of Church and Allen at 3 pm. Burial will follow in Comstock Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society.
