Albert Nassar

Al was born in Richfield Springs, NY on December 16, 1924, the son of Frank and Nora (Haddad) Nassar. He grew up in the Richfield Springs area attending and graduating from the local school. He was a veteran of The United States Army, 93rd Bomber Group.

On December 26, 1951 in Richfield Springs, Al married Joan Ward, a teacher at Richfield Springs, who passed away November 2, 2002. After their marriage, they built their life in Norwich.

Al was involved in several business ventures. In 1958 he and Maurice Slater opened Norwich Tire Company. Al eventually bought out his partner and operated the business for over thirty years. It is now owned and operated by his son Bob.

Al’s keen sense of business led him to join with other local businessmen in a number of ventures. One of those ventures was building and operating the Chenango Inn which is now the Red Roof Inn.

Al was also an avid sportsman. He was a founding member of the Lost Pond Club and was heavily involved in developing the skeet program. An excellent skeet shooter, in 1997, he was honored as a National Skeet Shooting Association Honorable Mention All American Senior Skeet shooter.

Al was involved in raising funds for the Community Chest/United Way and was one of the men who worked on the community garden in North Norwich.

Al is survived by his daughter Carol Nassar, son Robert Nassar and his wife Elizabeth, all of Norwich, his three grandchildren: Matthew Nassar and his wife Joy, Kristin Lumnah and husband Geoff, and Jamie Nassar and Chris Barner, along with 5 great grandchildren. Also surviving is his sister - in- law Joy Nassar, several nieces, nephews, and cousins, and his great neighbors LaVerna and Jim Miles.

Besides his wife Joan, Al was predeceased by his sister Frieda Baddour and her husband Ed, and his brothers Joseph Nimey, Sr., Mitchell Nimey, Louis Nassar, and Raymond Nassar and his wife Connie.

A Memorial service for Al will be held on Wednesday, September 13, at 11:00 am at the United Church of Christ First Congregational of Norwich. The family will receive friends immediately following the service. There will be no calling hours.
